"We want to enjoy the backyard more, but should we build a deck, a patio, a pergola, or one of those covered pavilions?" We hear some version of this every spring. The honest answer is that it depends on how you'll use the space and what you're comfortable spending. Here's how to sort it out before you call anyone.
Start with how you'll use it
The structure follows the use, not the other way around. Before you fall in love with a photo, get clear on the main thing you want:
- Shade and definition over an existing patio? A pergola does that for the least money.
- A raised, flat platform off the back of the house, especially over a sloped or walk-out yard? That's a deck.
- A ground-level surface for dining and a fire feature? A patio in concrete or pavers.
- A true outdoor room you can use in a passing shower or shade the whole afternoon? A covered pavilion.
Nail the primary use first. Everything else, size, materials, budget, flows from there.
Modest budget: shade, surface, and simplicity
If you want a real improvement without a big project, this tier delivers the most per dollar:
- A paver or concrete patio, a clean, durable surface for a table and chairs, with no framing or footings to pay for on a covered structure.
- A simple pressure-treated deck off the back door, practical and budget-friendly.
- A pergola for shade and to define the space over a patio or deck.
You're skipping a roof and utilities here, so the cost drivers are mostly size and surface material. It's the smart place to start if you're not sure how much you'll use the space yet.
Mid-range: comfort and a focal point
This is where an outdoor space starts to feel like a destination:
- A composite deck with quality railings, less upkeep than wood over the long haul (we break that trade-off down in our guide on composite vs. wood decks).
- A pergola with integrated lighting so the space works after dark.
- A paver patio with a built-in fire feature, the single best upgrade for stretching our short season into cool spring and fall evenings.
Cost climbs with better materials, lighting, and any masonry fire feature, but this is the tier most families land in and are happy with for years.
Premium / entertainer: the outdoor room
If you host, cook, and want to be outside no matter the weather, this is the tier:
- A covered pavilion with an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, ceiling fans, and lighting, a genuine second living room.
- A multi-level deck or a cable-rail deck for clean sightlines, especially where there's a view worth keeping open.
- Full utilities, gas, water, and electric run out to the space for cooking and comfort.
Here you're paying for a roof engineered for our snow load, foundations, and utilities. It's the biggest investment, and it's what turns a backyard into the place everyone ends up. If entertaining is your goal, our guide on backyard entertaining spaces digs into the details.
What actually drives the cost
Across every tier, the same handful of factors move the number:
- Size, square footage is the biggest lever.
- Cover, a roof means engineered framing and footings, a real step up in cost.
- Foundation, footings below the frost line so nothing heaves in our freeze-thaw winters.
- Materials, pressure-treated vs. composite, concrete vs. pavers, standard vs. cable railing.
- Utilities, every gas, water, or electric run adds up.
